FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE
Ihave some tea!
I have some tea! I have some tea! If you have been downtown lately, no doubt you have seen the old Oak Leaf Bakery building covered in scaffolding and wondered what’s going on.
Well, I have permission to spill the tea: A high-end steakhouse is coming to downtown.
The owner’s name is Juan Rubio, and if that name sounds familiar it shouldn’t because he is not related to any of our lovely Rockdale Rubios.
That’s all I’ve got so far but will keep you posted. That’ll be a nice addition to our downtown, won’t it? —kwc— Don’t miss our Chamber of Commerce fireworks show on Tuesday, July 4, at Fair Park starting at 6 p.m. For only $5 your children can play as many games as they’d like, and there are a whole lot of them. Fun, food, live music and the fireworks start at dusk.
And look at this list of food: pupusas, street tacos, hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, pizza, snow cones, fruit cups and corn in a cup. Something for all tastes.
Special thanks to all the businesses who sponsored the event and games. See ad on page 3A for more information. Sounds like fun for the whole family. —kwc— And on Saturday night don’t miss Brooke Graham and Friends Songwriters Showcase at the historic Kay Theater at 7 p.m. which is a fundraiser for restoring The 1895.
Also featured are Charlie Bishop, Stacie Crocker, Billy Gage, Eric Hamilton and Charlie Weyler.
There will be a cash beer and wine bar. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
Sponsors are Atmos Energy, Oncor, RIOT Platforms, Alpha One Chevrolet, Bland Construction and the Rockdale Rotary Club.
Should be a fun night of music. I wonder if Brooke will be singing her new No. 1 hit single “Easy Does It?” —kwc— After a long search we have finally hired a sportswriter and he starts around Aug. 1. I would like to thank my friend, Derek Thomas, for filling in for us in the interim. Derek and his wife, Gay, recently moved here from Houston and bought their retirement home after seeing a post I shared on my social media.
Oddly enough, we were already friends on social media but had never met in person. I have really enjoyed getting to know them and I was so happy when Derek offered to help with sports because it’s one less thing I have to worry about on a weekly basis.
Plus, you don’t want me writing sports.
For sure. I can’t tell you who the new sportswriter is yet, but you already know him. We will make an announcement soon.
