We have been busy at The Rockdale Reporter. I told you last week that Gene Stork moved his business into our building which required us to do some moving and cleaning which was much needed anyway.

Shannon Whorton and Mary Lou Loehr filled up a whole dumpster full of a bunch of old stuff that needed to be thrown out anyway.

The Reporter used to be in the building next door which is now occupied by The Place of Hope. We’ve been in our current building since around 1979 and I swear some of the stuff we threw away was at least that old.

So now we have a dance floor’s worth of room in the back which is a good thing because our long-term plans for this building are to divide it in half and occupy one side and rent the other side out. Gene is just the first tenant.

And this town is in dire need of rentable office space so that works out well.

Since Gene is all set up now the building smells an awful lot less like printers ink and dust, and more like barbicide which is the disinfectant solution that you smell any time you walk into a barber or beauty shop. And a vast improvement in my opinion, although when I smell my first perm I may change my mind.

We also had a bunch of printing-related machinery that, except for one printing press, no one wanted so we found someone to dismantle it all for scrap.

I met James Simonton briefly at Monday night’s city council meeting and will be doing a feature story on him in next week’s paper.

He owns 3G Farm on US 77 where he grows hemp and will open a store selling hemp products out of the store which used to be a nail salon next to Banda’s. THC products are all the rage and good for a variety of ailments. He hopes to have his boutique open by the first of February.

Don’t forget to go support the Starr Family on Saturday morning starting at 10:30 a.m. at Brookshire Brothers where you can get a pulled pork sandwich, chips and a drink for $10.

The fundraiser is to handle medical and living expenses since Charles Starr is out of work for a while after surgery. Charles is a good guy and helps many people. And now he needs help so let’s all turn out and show the Starr family some love.
