He told me to tell you that

We have a basketball goal in our driveway. The Blonde and I came home the other day and there was a little boy making use of the net doing his best LeBron impression. When he saw us, he asked if he could use the goal. Looks like you already are. A few days later we came home to a full fledged March Madness tournament in the driveway.

After the tournament, we had to clean up Snapple bottles and a variety of other pieces of trash. Coliseum clean up is now on my resume as is running a First Aid station. During a timeout, one boy rang the doorbell and needed some minor medical attention so Jen did what she thought any good trainer would do. She now answers to “Doc.”

Running a sports complex is starting to get tiresome, especially when the games go on after dark. One of the reasons beyond hearing the constant dribbling of the ball and the crowd noise when someone makes a great shot is we have to park the car across the street to ensure there is no collateral damage from the Final Four.

When the game is over, this old pastor has to get up and move the car back into the carport. Not only am I old and tired but go to bed early, so my night time routine is all jacked up.

I’m still a fan of best seller “Love Does” by Bob Goff and well, love does, which is why I’m willing to do what I do for some little boys who have a basketball but no backboard.

The Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12) keeps me busy. If I had a basketball and thought I was the next Zion Williamson, I would want someone to cut me some slack and let me throw a few three pointers (along with some bricks) in their driveway. So we do for others what we would want done for us right?

I read somewhere (first Corinthians 13:4-7, 13) that love is patient, it’s kind, it’s not arrogant, and it’s not rude. Love does not insist on its own way, it’s not irritable or resentful. Love bears all things, it hopes for the best and it hangs in there. Love is the greatest. Ugh.

Love sounds easy until you can’t park in your driveway. Love is all good until it costs you something. Until it hurts to love, love is easy to give. It’s easy to say, “I love you” and hearing, “I love you too.” There’s a lot of fake love going around.

I have a friend named Marcus. He’s a pastor and he’s a tiger. I talk to Marcus on the phone probably three times a week and we text a lot. Pastor Marcus always tells me that he loves me before we hang up. I know he loves me because he is always there when I need him, he always listens and he always tells me the truth even when it’s painful. We all need some dudes like this in our life. We all need some real love in our lives.

Go out and love somebody today. Love until it hurts, it may hurt you but it might hurt them. He told me to tell you that.

“Love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding.” (Mark 12:13)
