FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE
If you were not at the American Legion Hall on Monday for their Memorial Day program, you really missed something special. I have to admit I got a little teary eyed several at several points.
I know I have been to several events at our Post 358, but I didn’t remember the reading of the names with a chorus of “here” from the audience. That’ll make you teary eyed. Especially since they were read by Tatiana and Luke Olivares who are both going into the United States Naval Academy this summer.
Tatiana is going into the Naval Academy Preparatory School on June 25, and her little brother, Luke, will go the United States Naval Academy STEM program this week from June 5 to June 10.
I would also like to give a shoutout to the Communities in Concert Band. They sounded great and really added a nice touch with their music. —kwc— When I got to work on Tuesday morning, Mavis and Cinder had tipped over a screen in front of Shannon’s desk, so I put it back up. Something was going on with those cats, but I couldn’t figure out exactly what.
But Shannon quickly did when he arrived. The cats had cornered a tiny mouse and were playing with it mercilessly. I guess it’s a good thing they are well-fed because the tiny mouse was uninjured.
Animal catcher extraordinaire, Mary Lou, caught it quickly and let it go outside. If the mouse is anything like the squirrels I have told you about before, I’m sure he will be back. —kwc— Speaking of squirrels, Bill Silvey and Scott Starnes recently put a new roof on The Reporter so now there are no more varmints or leaks. We are all happy about that.
The leaks were mostly contained in the warehouse portion of the building, which is where Gene Stork’s shampoo bowl is located. Since we no longer have leaks we got rid of about 25 garbage cans that we used to catch the rainwater, so now he can use the small darkroom to mix up his hair colors and such. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that the cats regularly knock things off shelves in his area. I don’t think he’s too fond of them. And his dog, Winston, doesn’t like them either. He stays up here in his big crate during the day while we’re working. —kwc— My nephew, Augie, graduated on Friday night so we decided to have a special dinner for him at the Piano Bar on Saturday night. I had a delicious, perfectly cooked steak made by cousin Kaitlynne Schnerr. She also made a not-on-the-menu side dish of Brussels sprouts with lots of bacon. I was in heaven.
Mom will never purposely finish any steak because she likes to have a cold steak sandwich the following day, which is exactly what she did with hers.
Ken came from Fredericksburg and we all had some nice family time.
