Burn ban lifted— As of 12:01 p.m., Tuesday, August 23, Milam County will temporarily lift its burn ban. Unless there is substantial countywide rainfall during the coming days, the burn ban may be reimplemented on Tuesday, August 30, at 12:01 p.m.

Post Oak Savannah Board of Directors— The Commissioners Court recognized outgoing President Sidney Youngblood and outgoing Director Dana McClaren on Monday. Youngblood had served on the board of directors for nine years. Seven of those years were as president. Dana McClaren served on the Board as the Director representing agricultural interests.
Both were presented plaques by the Commissioners Court and the Post Oak Savannah Board. We thank both for their years of hard work and dedicated service to the citizens of Milam County.
The Court also appointed Keith Copeland to fill the industrial position vacated by Youngblood and Kit Worley to fill the position vacated by McClaren.
Milam County Historical Commission— The Milam County Historical Commission was recognized and thanked at Commissioners Court for receiving the Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission.
We have a great, hard working group of men and women on the Commission, and it is one of a few that receives this most prestigious award from the Texas Historical Commission.
We thank them profusely for their service to preserve the rich history of Milam County.
Milam County budget— On Monday, the Commissioners Court adopted the proposed 2023 Milam County budget. The budget will provide for two new Milam County deputies and one narcotics officer; one new lawyer and a staff person to assist with the backlog of criminal cases caused by the COVID pandemic; and two new individuals to assist with Bea’s Kitchen.
County employees and elected officials received a badly needed raise. Milam County officials ranked last or next to last in most categories of pay when compared to other counties with similar populations.
In addit ion, the tax rate will be lowered from .73 to $100.00 of evaluation to .684100 or a 6.28% decrease. However, for most the total amount of taxes paid by property owners will still go up due to the increased property values.
