Another Tax Rate Reduction— Milam County plans to further reduce the tax rate from .684100 to .661356. This will be an overall reduction of about .7 per $100 of evaluation from the original .73. On Monday, Aug. 29 we discovered that our software had incorrectly calculated the rate at .684100 instead of .66136. Therefore, the Commissioners Court will convene on Sept. 6 to begin the correction process and public hearings on the amended proposed budget and the amended proposed tax rate will be held on Monday, Sept. 26 at 9:30 a.m. at the Milam County Courthouse. Thankfully, we had started the budget process early and we have time to make the necessary corrections before the budget completion deadline of Sept. 30.

Burn Ban Reimplemented— Effective at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, August 29, we reimplement the burn ban in Milam County. Last Sunday we had a large grassfi re outside of Cameron as we have not received much rain in the last week or so. Hopefully, we will get more rain to help alleviate the drought and the need for the ban.

County Judge Show— Tune in tomorrow morning at 9:05 a.m. to KMIL 105.1 and KRXT 98.5 for the County Judge show. We will have representatives from the Central Avenue Bistro, the Cameron Chamber and the Milam County Historical Commission in the studio to talk about the new historical marker that the Bistro has received. The marker will be unveiled at a special ceremony on Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. The Bistro is located in a renovated historic home with such rich history, all of which will discussed on Wednesday at 9:05 a.m. Don’t miss the show.

Renovation Project— Milam County is seeking bids for renovation of the former Professional Building for use as the Milam County Health Department, the WIC and for a vaccination clinic. The building is located next door to the newly renovated Milam County Annex. ARPA funds will be used to pay for the proposed renovation project. Much work has already been done at the building including asbestos abatement and parking lot construction. Sealed bids are due at the office of the Milam County Judge by 5 p.m. Sept. 23, and the contract could be awarded on September 26.

Meeting with Sen. Cruz— On Monday, Aug. 29, I was honored to meet with Sen. Ted Cruz. Sen. Cruz met with Lee County Judge Fischer, Burleson County Judge Keith Schroeder and me. We discussed many issues that affect rural counties, including the new “Chip Act.” The Chip Act was signed into law earlier this month and it provides funding for the production of microchips. Of interest is funding for education related to chip production. Specifi cally, the hope is funding for renovation of the former Rockdale Hospital for use by the RISD and Temple College for educational classes needed for chip production. Sen. Cruz graciously offered his assistance.
