Over the years, there has been interest in adding art murals to some of our downtown and community walls. Various individuals and entities have explored this idea, and in 2021, it looks like it is going to happen.
Several weeks ago, Rockdale Earth Day Chairperson Dave Melton met with City Manager Barbara Holly to discuss the concept.
An exploratory committee was formed that included Melton; Holly; Gary Greisbach, representing both the Rockdale Downtown Association (RDA) and Rockdale Earth Day; Dan Ratliff, representing the RDA; Dr. Denise Monzingo, representing the Rockdale ISD; and Michelle Larkin, representing both the city council and the Municipal Development District (MDD).
The exploratory committee was tasked with determining the feasibility of the project, community interest and affordability. On all fronts, the answers were affirmative.
A nationally-known mural artist has been identified and late spring-early summer dates are being considered for this initiative. Several individuals and local businesses, the MDD and the RDA have pledged financial and logistical support for the project.
