Mural artist Sam Welty arrived last Friday and he’s already started his first mural downtown on the MDD building facing Wolf Park. That mural will be a tribute to El Camino Real de los Tejas. I was lucky enough to see his rendering of what it will look like when finished and all of you are going to be very impressed.
Welty was given a copy of Dr. Lucile Estell’s book on the subject so he would know the history.
There are many walls for him to choose from, but the only other one that has been nailed down so far is the side of the swimming pool building at Veteran’s Park. It is going to be a very nice backdrop for Elissa Benford and the City of Rockdale’s completed monument project .which is already in place.
A community meet and greet for the artist will be on Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Wolf Park. Please mask up.

Last year about this time my pug, Sandie Lou, ran into the woods behind my house and was never seen again. I did everything I could to find her and searched every inch of the woods. I was very sad for a while.
Then of all things, our other dog, Kallie, adopted a dog herself. He was so skinny and sad looking. He was also very skittish and took a while to warm up to me. No animal in my care stays skinny for long though, so now he’s looking good and we named him Flaco, which means skinny in Spanish.
We’ve had him for more than a year but he is still kind of feral. He loves me, Mom and Dad, but he’s fairly shy around anyone else. And that worries me because I made them an appointment with Kayla at The Dogspaw and I’m not sure how he’s going to act. We may be disinvited to be clients in the very near future.
And in case you didn’t know, The Dogspaw has moved to Lexington right on the highway at 8541 Highway 77.

The second annual Best of Rockdale contest is about to start. There are many different categories and you can vote for your favorite businesses in each one of them.
This year, The Rockdale Reporter is sponsoring the contest with the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, so look for ads and a link to the voting soon.
Last year the voting was fierce and we expect that it will be again this year.

Last week I sent out questions to a lot of current and former Rockdale residents asking them where they were when they heard about the 9/11 attack. We have been inundated with responses.
Dad told me it’s just like when President Kennedy was assassinated. Everyone remembers where they were when they heard about it.
Next week we are going to share some of them with you on the 20th anniversary. Can you believe it’s been 20 years ago?
I was working in Houston at a newspaper called The Greensheet. It wasn’t really a newspaper. It just had ads in it. I was in a big phone room which had a huge wall of windows overlooking the downtown Houston skyline.
Our boss came in late and told us what happened, and of course we were all shocked. There were so many unanswered questions that we wondered if Houston would be attacked. My coworkers and I were all staring out the windows wondering if we’d see a plane hit a skyscraper.
What was normally a very noisy environment with phones ringing and people talking, was eerily quiet. No one was calling because everyone in America was watching the events unfold on television on a very sad day. kyle@rockdalereporter.com
