Today is my mama’s birthday so if you see her give her a birthday greeting!
—kwc— You already know when you come to The Rockdale Reporter you can buy a newspaper, have papers faxed and make copies. But in 2022 you’ll also be able to get a haircut, a permanent wave and take quilting classes.
That’s right, Gene Stork is moving his Talk of the Town Salon and Quilt Shop into our building. I wonder if there is anywhere else in the United States where you can get your hair cut next to an antique printing press? My guess would be no.
So we welcome Gene and hope to see all of his clients soon!
—kwc— I rang in the new year much as I had expected by sitting outside with my dogs drinking some nice Cabernet Sauvignon. I bought two plastic Adirondack chairs at some point last year and both of them ended up breaking on New Year’s Eve.
And I was in the chairs when they broke. The first one wasn’t so bad, but when the second one broke I went down with it and injured my elbow which still hurts.
I’ve been buying those chairs for several years because they are so comfortable, but they don’t last long if they are outside in the elements.
One time when I was living in Clear Lake the entire back broke off one of them and I went down with the chair back. I was trapped like a turtle on his back. On either side were shards of sharp plastic points poking into my sides. I couldn’t move. I am lucky my roomie, Lee, was in the kitchen and saw the whole thing or I’d still be there.
So this New Year’s Eve episode made me really consider dropping some weight. I have so far gone on my one-mile walks every day of the new year. Not that six days is very many, but it’s more exercise than I have gotten in a while. The dogs really like it even if I’m undecided.
—kwc— To say that the first week of January is a slow news week would be an understatement. That happens every year before people start getting back to their normal lives after the holidays.
As luck would have it, Rockdale’s own Georgia Rolan Zamora shared some soup recipes with me from her popular Mill Street Tea Room just in time for this cold weather. And you can see them on page 7A in this week’s paper.
—kwc— I tried an experiment on Monday night by letting both dogs inside to sleep with me since it was so cold.
The night before I put them both in the garage which was all shut up because we moved the plants in over the weekend. Plus they have a big, comfy bed in there.
I knew Kallie would be OK, but Flaco has never been in the house before so I was a little worried about him.
Turns out we all slept like babies and there were no accidents anywhere. I think they realized that they were getting a treat and so were on their best behavior.
I was actually kind of dreading going home on Monday night after work because it was time to de-Christmas the house and Mom went all out this year since we had everyone home.
But it turns out I didn’t need to worry about that either because Noelia and Augie came during the afternoon and it was almost all done by the time I got there. I took down the tree and carried some ornament boxes to the shed and that was it.
