FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE

There were some special moments at Friday night’s graduation ceremonies at Tiger Field. Valedictorian Ciara Miles received her diploma from her father and school board member Charles Miles. And the same with Blaydn Barcak and his father Jason Barcek.

My favorite though was Ethan Muston’s special moment. Some of you may not know this but Ethan is still in high school - or was until Friday - but is also a volunteer firefighter for Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department. At some point during the evening a firetruck pulled up at the north end of the field. When Ethan’s name was called to walk up and receive his diploma, that firetruck blasted its lights and sirens catching everyone off guard, including him, I think. That was a very special thing for the firefighters to do. -kwc We had a crazy week at our house last week. Mom, Dad and I all made it through the pandemic without getting COVID and suddenly Mom got it from a friend, who shall remain nameless, who picked it up in a hospital when visiting someone.

Whatever strain is going around now is a very mild one. Mom had a little fever, 99.9, and felt tired but that was about it. Somehow Dad did not catch it from her and neither did I. I don’t know how that happened.

She’s fine now, but that was strange. I did wear my N95 mask indoors for a couple of days, but I mostly stayed outside which I normally do anyway. I work in a windowless office, so I spend as much time outside as possible.

So beware because COVID is still around. -kwc Noelia and 15 of her students are in Spain for a month on a Study Abroad program offered by Southwestern University where she is a Spanish Professor. I took her to the airport in Austin last week, where she flew to Dallas, then on to Madrid.

She kept telling me we were going on the toll road, and I assumed she meant 130 which is the only way I’ve gotten to the “new” airport in Austin, but she ended up taking me on another route and I had no idea where I was the entire time. I think we were on 183, but I could be mistaken.

I was driving and I don’t like to not know where I am going. It could be a Virgo thing, but it could also be that I was in a horrible accident many years ago in Houston with my friend, Brenda. I must always be the driver, no matter what. I am a terrible passenger. And Brenda was the same way after the accident. Her husband finally just gave up driving when they were going somewhere together. So I guess I am kind of a control freak, but mostly in the car.

When we got to the entrance of the airport I immediately knew where 130 was so I came back that way because there was no way I was going to remember how to get back the way we came.

The huge Tesla building is near the airport and there is a whole lot of nothing between Tesla and when you finally get back to civilization on 130, but I’ll bet there will be neighborhoods and stores and apartment complexes popping up soon along that route.

And by “civilization” I mean Costco and that big shopping center across 130 from Costco and the huge HEB right down the road.
