Here are 15 things going on that have nothing to do with the virus
Body

Obviously we all need to be mindful of the you-know-what and take precautions and be careful but you know what?

There are other things going on in our community that have nothing to do with the virus and many of them are pretty neat.

We’ll get back to the serious stuff next week but, for now, here are 15 Things to Celebrate ANYWAY:

• It’s fall, the 100-degree days are over (for another season) and we’ve had some glorious mornings, with more to come.

• Football is back, we’re getting to go to games and it’s a lot of fun. Go Tigers!

• Crape Myrtles have bloomed, a little late but better late than you-know-what.

• There may not be a full-fledged Rockdale Fair this month but kids will get to show, and sell, their animals and baked goods and someone will still be crowned Fair Queen.

• While we’re on the subject, there will still be a barbecue cookoff and car show, although it is not affiliated with the Fair.

• Rockdale is getting a gorgeous new Christmas tree—yes, 2020 will still have a Christmas— an almost 32-foot-tall, almost 20-foot diameter (branches) stunner with 56,336 lights, thanks to the Rockdale Downtown Association.

• We have toilet paper and paper towels on the shelves in stores. (Remember April, anyone?)

• While we may have missed the spring Stash Your Trash event because of you-know-what it’s back from 8 a.m. to 12-noon Saturday at Fair Park. (See story page 1A).

• The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department is getting a new fire truck. Does that affect you. Let’s hope not, but if you ever need a fire department to respond to your house you couldn’t possibly live in a better location than Rockdale.

• The Central Texs Food Bank is continuing to visit the Rockdale KC Hall parking lot twice each month, serving not far short of 1,000 persons each time.

• There’s a new free food program for children and senior citizens coming to a downtown Rockdale location, probably as soon as this month.

• Rockdale Christian Services Food Pantry and Heavenly Treasures Thrift Shop are still going strong.

• Milam County has landed a number of great grants which will help improve the lives of some of its citizens for many years to come.

• Despite, 2020 being, well-2020, sales tax receipts for the City of Rockdale, Milam County and the Rockdale Municipal Development District have continued to increase. Somehow.

• It’s less than three months until 2021. And that year has got to be better than this one.—M.B.
