A fun new contest is headed our way and it’s something we can all get behind.
The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a new contest “The Best of Rockdale 2020.” There are 51 different categories of business we can all vote on to see who our favorites are.
The Reporter has partnered with the Chamber for this contest to help promote it, but the good news is neither the Chamber nor The Reporter has anything to do with who the winners turn out to be. The winners are all determined by the good people of Rockdale.
Who serves the best breakfast tacos? Who has the best Mexican food in town? Where is the best place for out-of-town guests to stay? Please check out the Chamber’s ad on page 6B for a complete list of all categories and directions on where to go online to vote.
I worked for several different newspapers in Houston over the past 30 years and these contests are always fun. There is always friendly competition and maybe even a little bit of good-natured trash talk among rivals.
When you cast your vote for your favorites you will also be asked why you are voting for a particular business. And it’s very important to fill that part out because in the event of a tie the comments will be used to determine the winner.
And just so nobody gets left out, the 51st category is a “Wild Card.” You can vote for any business or service not covered by the other 50 categories who you think is deserving of a Best of Rockdale 2020 award.
And we wish good luck to all.
Another fun thing happening in our town right now is the Rockdale Down town Association’s sponsorship of a beautiful new Christmas tree for Wolf Park.
Businesses and individuals can help pay for the tree by donating anywhere from $25 to $1,000.
And it’s going to be beautiful and a far cry from the tree we’ve had for the past several years.
It is 32 feet tall, almost 20 feet around and it is covered in over 56,000 lights. So big that it will be visible even to travelers passing through on US 79.
Platinum sponsors ($1,000) will receive recognition in a tribute placed alongside the tree each year.
And what a fun new Christmas tradition this is going to be. Go to the Rockdale Downtown Association’s Facebook page to download a sponsorship form and mail it to RDA, PO Box 163, Rockdale, TX 76567.
Another annual tradition coming soon is The Reporter’s Gridiron Football and Fall Sports special section.
As always we will cover Rockdale, Thorndale and Milano teams, bands, cheerleaders and drill teams.
We were originally coming out on Aug. 27, but COVID-19 had other ideas. Our new date is Sept. 10.
The Reporter and all Milam County residents wish the kids and coaches a great year.
