FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE

Is it too early to start talking about Christmas? In my book it is definitely too early, but I need to make an exception this year because an important deadline is coming up on Nov. 4.

Some of my favorite childhood memories are from Christmastime. Santa always came during the night, and we woke up the next morning to discover he had been there and filled our stockings and brought us some of the things we picked out of the Montgomery Ward catalogue.

Those are the kinds of memories that every kid should have, but, unfortunately, that is not the case. Luckily we can all do something about that through the very nice people who sponsor the Buddy Oney Toy Run every year. On Sat., Dec. 7 the Toy Run will begin and end at The Ranch with registration starting at 9 a.m.

And here is the important deadline part: you can pre-order both long- and short-sleeved t-shirts from Cynthia Parker Ferrell by calling her at 512-698-2784. The deadline for the shirts is coming up quickly on Nov. 4.

This great organization has raised over $78,000 for needy children in Milam County for the past 13 years. This year’s recipients of 100% of the toys and money raised are The Milam County CPS Board (Child Protective Services), The Milam County Brown Santa Program, Thorndale Cares and The Rockdale Christmas Round Up.

For more information about the Toy Run, call Charles Starr at 512-540-2561 or Neal Ferrell at 512-299-7446.

If, like me, you are not a rider (and you should all be very thankful that I don’t own a motorcycle), you can still participate by bringing a child’s gift (or two or three) worth $25 to The Ranch the day of the Toy Run or by calling any of the numbers above. Or cash donations are always a welcome gift and so easy to exchange.

Let’s all give ourselves a gift for our hearts this year by making some Milam County children happy at Christmas.

In my family Christmas Eve was all about Jesus, and Christmas Day was all about Santa.

The Methodist Church always has a candlelight service on Christmas Eve. It’s always so pretty when we light our candles and turn the lights off. It always gives me a peaceful feeling. Tradition will do that I guess.

Santa always came during the night. I remember there being a few years when mom and dad made all of us kids go back to bed because we got up too early. We could never figure out why our parents always looked so tired on Christmas day. Strange.

Happy memories.

Now go call Cynthia and order your t-shirts right now.
