FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE
We had such a good time celebrating my brother, Ken, on Saturday. (See story on the front page.) He was inducted as president of the Texas Press Association at the 144th TPA Convention and Trade Show, held at the Kalahari Resort in Round Rock, where Mom, Dad and I have never been.
That place is a huge madhouse of activity.
As some of you already know, Dad has a bad hip and has been using a cane for a little while. Thank goodness Mom had the good idea to bring a wheelchair she found at St. John’s United Methodist Church because the Kalahari is enormous.
I’m sure I got all my steps in that day. The convention took place about a mile from the front entrance. And parking was a long way away too.
The funny part was finding out that the wheelchair was made for a child so there were no footrests. Dad had to hold his feet up the whole time. But we made it and we all had a good time and ate some good food. It was very nice catching up to some of our lifelong newspaper friends as well.
And it was pretty touching too. Our great-grandfather, John Esten Cooke, who bought The Reporter in 1911, was president of the Texas Press Association a mere 103 years earlier. How’s that for following in footsteps? We are all really proud of Ken, but when he sent me his “official” photo by text I replied with “Nerd Alert” so he doesn’t get the big head. —kwc— I missed the RIOT Fair due to being in Round Rock, but my trusty Mary Lou took hundreds of photos, way more than we had room for in the paper. The event looked like it was well-attended and lots of fun.
We will make a post on The Reporter’s Facebook page with all of the photos from the day later this week after we get the paper out so our readers can see it all. —kwc— Don’t forget that the Rockdale Homecoming is happening this Sunday at the Patterson Center. I hear The Regeneration Singers are going to make a repeat performance and will sing a capella this year. It was fun watching them last year.
This year lunch is provided by Thorndale Meat Market. Activities start at 9 a.m., if you’re an early bird, with coffee and donuts.
The program starts at 12:15. Photos of the two classes being celebrated, 1948 and 1973, will be taken at 11 a.m.
I’ve had a lot of fun doing research on the McVoy family. I had no idea that Lori McVoy and our favorite librarian, Melanie Todd, were related. Or Jenny Gebhart. Rockdale is a small world.
—kwc— Weather permitting, TxDOT work on the intersection at Cameron Avenue and Main Street was set to begin in earnest on Wednesday of this week.
Traffic will be down to only one lane so expect delays or take another route.
The work on the intersection is supposed to take one week.
The press release I got from TxDOT said all of the work is supposed to be done by “later this summer” which is an update from the last one I got that said everything would be finished in
“early 2023.” —kwc— At the end of June I take another A1C test to see if I am back in the normal range and no longer diabetic. And I’d better be because we have a table full of candy in the office at all times and I haven’t touched any of it since I was diagnosed.
The medicine is supposed to make some people nauseous, but that wasn’t the case with me at first. My nausea came later but it hasn’t happened often, thank goodness.
I’m hoping for the best. My A1C was 8.4 if I remember correctly so I don’t have far to go to get to the normal range which is below 5.7. Wish me luck!
