I’m writing this particular column because A.) I’m prone to overshare, and B.) I didn’t know any of this and I’m sure I’m not the only diabetic in Rockdale.

When you’re diagnosed with diabetes you have to watch out for your eyes (and your feet) so you can’t just go to an optometrist anymore. You have to go to an ophthalmologist because diabetes can do strange things to your eyes like diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, glaucoma and cataracts. I didn’t know that until I went to my appointment last Wednesday.

The appointment took every bit of two hours and was very thorough. I saw a tech for one hour and then the doctor for the last hour.

As my appointment was nearing the end and the doctor hadn’t said anything was wrong, I asked her if there was anything I needed to be worried about.

She said, “I thought there was going to be because you just got a prescription a year ago and your left eye has changed a lot in that short amount of time. When that happens, we usually have to talk about the C-word.”

I said, “Cancer?”

“No, you idiot! Cataracts.”

Anyway, luckily it turns out that I don’t have anything to worry about and I can see much better.

So if you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, get thee to an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. —kwc— Please drive downtown and look at the new Christmas decorations if you haven’t already. We had a workday on Saturday and got a lot done on the new decorations that were bought this year. Rockdale hasn’t had Christmas decorations in three years because of a combination of COVID and all the TxDOT construction.

I’ve already heard lots of comments about how nice they look. I think thank yous are in order. The following people, businesses and organizations raised $32,850 for the new decorations.

Rockdale Downtown Association, the City of Rockdale, the Rockdale MDD and an anonymous donor got the ball rolling with donations of $5,000 each, and the remainder was through the generosity of 77 CrossRoads Storage LLC, ABC Technologies, Attorneys of Texas Title, Billy Buck’s Deer & Exotic Sales LLC, Climate Control AC & Heating, Danna Strait, Hodge Podge Etc., Original B Brothers LLC, Rockdale Rotary Club, Realtor Shannon Kornegay, Mike and Shirley Walker, the Kay Theater Foundation, Vision Historic Preservation Foundation, Manuel Imports and The Office Steakhouse. And a huge shout out to Juan Rubio and all of his workers for hanging the lights on top of the downtown buildings. Some of the new decorations are up in Wolf Park and provide more photo opportunities to visitors.

The lighted garland on the pretty new railings are a nice touch as well.

So if you see any of these people, please make sure to thank them for their contributions to Lighting Up Rockdale.

New decorations for the light posts downtown have been ordered but will not arrive in time for this Christmas, however new light poles are part of the TxDOT project will be installed in March of next year. They have a nostalgic design and will be yet another design element to make downtown shine.

Contact me or any other member of the Rockdale Downtown Association if you would like to make a contribution for the decorations for this year or in coming years.

Again, take a stroll or drive through downtown to help get you in a holiday mood!
