Body

I hope Judge Young’s mask order works because I am so very tired of COVID-19.

Sometimes I feel like my life is on hold. And it’s been on hold for far longer than I ever thought it would be.

I’m such a homebody anymore that I’m not exactly sure what I’d be doing if we weren’t in a pandemic, but at least I wouldn’t have that niggling feeling of worry.

Hopefully we all keep everyone in our town safe, and instead of saying hats off to the judge I’ll say, “Masks On, Steve!” And thank you for being proactive and transparent and keeping us safe in Milam County.

I know of a person in Rockdale who has lost three relatives to the virus. They didn’t live in Rockdale, but can you imagine having three family members all taken by the virus. How very sad.

This weekend I learned of the COVID-19 death of the first person I actually knew. It really hits home that this is all very real once it involves someone you know.

When I lived in Clear Lake there was a restaurant my friend Lee and I ate at very frequently. He was a manager at that restaurant. I wouldn’t call him a

I wouldn’t call him a friend exactly but I knew him. He always made it a

He always made it a point to come to the table and talk to us every time we were there when he was working. We got to know him and he got to know us. A very nice man, and I’m still a little in shock.

Hopefully it doesn’t take the actual death of a family member or our circle of friends for us to take it seriously, and I saw some promising steps in that direction over the weekend.

Noelia and I went to HEB and Costco in Hutto or Pflugerville. I say they are in Hutto but the stores claim to be in Pflugerville. But that’s where we went.

At HEB, the store was very, very busy. Annoyingly so. But out of all the people in the store there were only three I saw not wearing a mask.

And there are plenty of valid medical reasons for not wearing a mask. Some people have asthma. There are other medical reasons people can’t wear them.

I locked eyes with one man who wasn’t wearing a mask. He looked ill. The person he was with did have a mask on. I’m sure he had gotten some dirty looks for not wearing one because he smiled warmly at me and I smiled back. We told each other that what we are both doing was OK without words, just using the smiling of our eyes.

You can’t get into Costco without a mask for any reason so everyone there had one on.

The scene in both stores was a little surreal seeing an average American activity being done with masks on everyone’s faces. You see photos of this a lot in Asian countries, but it was a little jarring seeing it here.

But don’t get me wrong. I was definitely happy to see that we are finally taking this virus seriously.

Others want to politicize mask wearing of all things. I know one business owner who was called and asked if she was going to follow the judge’s mask order. She said yes or she would be fined. They told her they would no longer shop in her store. That’s difficult for me to believe. And incredibly selfish.

With the virus skyrocketing in Milam County and the whole state, mask wearing seems rather less a political statement than an IQ test.

Wear your masks, people. And let’s get rid of this virus once and for all.
