All right fellow Rockdalians, we have a mystery right here in our town that we need to solve.

The beautiful, mysterious woman pictured here worked in the Old City Hall building. This photo was taken in 1940.

Curah Beard, campaign manager for Vision Historic Preservation Foundation, the group who will bring our Old City Hall back to its former grandeur, sent me an email with the photo of this woman to see if we could identify her.

I didn’t know who she was and also didn’t notice the date, but I told her I would forward it to Dad to see if he knew. Dad wrote me back and told me he has no idea who she is because he was only five years old at the time.

So I had to write Curah back and tell her that she needs to find someone older than my dad to identify the woman. And Dad is 85, so good luck with that!

If my memory serves me I believe Rockdale’s favorite historian, Dr. Lucile Estelle, turns 92 soon. Maybe she will know.

Come on Rockdale. She has to be someone’s grandmother or great grandmother. Let’s solve this mystery. Contact me if you have any information.

Can we talk about older white ladies and sports for a minute?

Most of you already know we lost our sports editor, Raynard Churchwell, at the end of last year. I want to give you an update on him as well as tell you how fascinated people were by him.

He is now back in his home state of Georgia working for a TV station doing exactly the kind of job he got his degree in at college. He’s also much closer to his parents which is the best part.

I cannot tell you how many older white ladies I have run into who gushed about him when he was here and how much they are going to miss him now that he’s gone. I didn’t know older white ladies cared anything about sports, but I’m dumb for thinking that because my mother is basketball’s number one fan.

You cannot talk to my mother while the Lady Horns, Longhorn men or Lady Bears are on. She knows every player on every team and their stats. Knows the coaches. All of it.

I think she is even a bigger basketball fan than Dad, and he will watch any sport at any given time. I once walked through the TV room and he was watching Pack Burro Racing which is exactly what it sounds like: a pack of donkeys and their owners running a race. If there is competition, he’s watching it.

Anyway, ladies, I’m glad you were so fond of Raynard. We miss him too, but luckily we have Wynton Thomason back and you’ll love him as well.
