Reporter readers are invited to join our staff in continued prayers for former editor Mike Brown, who passed away Tuesday while entering the hospice stage of his battle with acute leukemia, as well as prayers for his wife, Sue, and their families. —kwc— I traveled down TX 36 from Milano to Caldwell the other day for the first time in a very long time. I got tired of that stretch of road after living in Houston for so long and started going through Blackjack instead.

I would a lways get stuck behind an 18-wheeler or a line of cars a mile long. Hardly anything has changed in all those years.

One thing that is missing is the white bull up on tall poles whose genitalia was often painted red back in my growing up days. He’s gone.

I remember back in those days a tornado came though there and knocked the tops off a bunch of old oak trees. They still haven’t totally recovered, but that sure is some pretty property with rolling hills.

The old Rock House is still there. I think I remember someone was going to fix it up. Actually, it might already be fixed up. I didn’t get a good look because the 18-wheeler I got stuck behind Friday liked to go about 80 which is my favorite speed, but I had Mavis the kitty in the car with me and she was not happy.

I was taking her to the vet in Caldwell for some shots, and she was not amused. We also thought something might be wrong with her voice because she was screaming the day we found her but has never “said” anything since. I was going to ask the vet about that, but I found out on the way over there that her voice is just fine. She said a lot on that drive. And if I spoke “kitty” it wouldn’t have been very nice at all translated into English. —kwc— Here’s a fun thing to do on Saturday night. There will be Stargazing in the lot behind The 1895 at 8 p.m. with Dr. Mark Bottoff from the Southwestern University Astrology Department explaining what is going on in the nighttime skies.

Br ing blanket s and drinks so you’ll be comfy. Curah Beard said she has arranged for the streetlights around the building to be off for a good view of the stars. —kwc— At a meeting the other day we were talking about Rockdale’s assets, focusing on what we have rather than what we don’t have. There were several categories and it made for an interesting conversation.

After Alcoa abandoned us, I think everyone in Rockdale was hoping and praying for a large employer, and that makes a lot of sense.

But a developer is in the process of buying land owned by the MDD to make a 660-home subdivision, and nothing much has happened at the old Alcoa property. (The closing of the property is supposed to happen very soon.) Certainly no large employer has come to save us, although there are more rumors about what’s going to happen at Sandow Lakes Ranch than you can shake a stick at.

It made me wonder if we were all hoping and praying for the wrong thing. I mean, if a large employer were to come here that would, of course, be wonderful. But the growth is obviously coming regardless. At this point whatever happens out there will just be a bonus I suppose.

Whatever is happening they are certainly being tight lipped about it.
