The Reporter is going to make some 2022 predictions about our town and we’ll check back in 2023 to see how we did.
In early 2022 The American Statesman Glove Co. will choose Rockdale as its home which will start an economic boom.
Housing starts will skyrocket and new service businesses will be attracted to Rockdale.
New apartments will go up overnight all over town. New neighborhoods will be plotted and
New neighborhoods will be plotted and growth will be to the west.
New grocery stores will come.
New restaurants.
Bakeries.
Brew pubs.
The decades-old Rockdale rumor that Disneyland is coming to the Alcoa property will come true and Rockdale’s businesses will thrive off the tourism.
A new hospital will be built with all the rooms, emergency services, labs, specialty doctors, etc. that we need.
New elementary schools will open close to some of the new neighborhoods.
A larger airport will be built and will fly Rockdalians to all the major airports in Texas. Jimmy Cox will be in charge.
A new cineplex. Costco.
Costco. Long John Silvers.
Long John Silvers.
Academy Sports & Outdoors.
A big nursery. Whataburger.
Whataburger.
Central Market.
Whole Foods.
Tesla, Google, Amazon, SpaceX, Apple, Facebook and Oracle will decide Austin is just a bit too much and will relocate here.
A nice seafood restaurant.
A dance club that doesn’t play country music.
An Asian specialty grocery store.
Barnes & Noble and Half Price Books.
For sure we need to do that wine tour thing again this year.
The Dewberry Festival will become a travel destination.
And then…
OK. Maybe we’ve gotten a little bit carried away.
Perhaps this is more of a 10- or 20-year plan.
But is it fun to imagine our little town getting the recognition it so rightfully deserves. —K.W.C.
