JUDGE’S COMMENTS

In the last seven months much has been accomplished. Economic development has been at the top of the list every day and there is great hope for the future.

Economic development is the real solution to most of our issues in the county and we must focus on keeping businesses we have and getting new ones.

Economic development is not measured by how many new businesses come to the community, but rather the business environment.

If we make it hard for businesses or make businesses feel unwanted, they simply will not come. Without new business, there are no new jobs and no additional tax revenue.

We have done a lot to make our county more united and more inviting. We had our first ever “Moot Court” competition where for the first time all five schools in the county came together to compete in a single event.

We held the first ever Milam County “summit.” Over 100 business and community leaders came together for the first time to hear from economic development experts to learn what we can do to help ourselves.

We held the first ever Rockdale – Cameron “Football Extraordinaire” to unite the two largest towns in the county and to start the process of eliminating the imaginary and divisive dividing line between these two fine groups.

We held our first ever “101” economic summit where over 100 business leaders and elected officials gathered to hear from experts in the field the very basics of what we should be doing to grow the county.

We had a voluntary tire clean up week and thousands of old tires were disposed of by the county. Your Commissioners Court has enacted first ever, tough new enforcement procedures for our health and safety laws and we are working to get the county cleaned up.

Last week another individual was indicted for having hundreds of old tires on his property.

The court enacted a new regulation that will govern new mobile home parks in the county, so that they will be kept clean, neat, safe and sanitary. Last week, for the first time ever, the county was awarded a $262,000. grant from the state for economic development.

The county made a first ever agreement with PHI air ambulance whereby a Milam resident does not have to pay for air transport when picked up for emergency health care in Milam or an adjacent county.

Bitmain is up and running and a new bitcoin miner is close to finalizing its agreement with Alcoa.

A 5,000-acre solar farm is coming to the Burlington area; a business development is coming in West Rockdale and we hope a new packaging business and hemp production are on the way.

We are making progress in Moving Milam Forward.
