Dear editor, I am 89 years old and in a recent article in The Reporter I was stunned beyond words when I realized that citizens of my dearly beloved Rockdale had been so rude to a candidate for office. The fact that the city had to pass an ordinance because of the rudeness was beyond my comprehension. I said to myself, “not my Rockdale.” I grew up in a Rockdale that was filled with kindness, love and understanding.

Mr. Beto came to Rockdale following his appearance in my present home of Brenham. Brenham is a majority Republican city.

But our crowd of Democrats were able to hear Mr. Beto’s review of the state and its needs. There were some demonstrators outside the venue who carried flags in support of Greg Abbott. They walked around waving the flags, but not any words were spoken harshly or any attendees touched.

I applaud the mayor and city council for their action.

And to Rev. Moss with all of your educational credentials I suggest you take time each week to read The Reporter’s “Voices of Faith” that Greg Nichols and Ken Ansell write so beautifully. This is the type of writing that we should follow, and Rockdale has for many, many years.

I remain a loyal Rockdalian, but a very disappointed one. My prayers go out to the mayor and city council.

On Nov. 8, each of us will be able to follow the constitution and the Holy Bible.

The council’s message was an admonition to treat everyone with respect, regardless of political party. Rather like Matthew 7:12, also called The Golden Rule.)
