Dear editor,

This past month, the country has heard, seen video footage and read the legislative report of the tragic day in Uvalde. While our prayers go out to the families of the students and teachers who lost their lives, as a school district it makes us reevaluate all of our safety plans to make sure we are doing all we can to keep our students and staff safe.

Our campuses have been assessed and evaluated by an outside company to give us information about what else we can do to our buildings to provide a safe environment. Some things are minor that we will have completed by the first day of school. Other items are larger, requiring construction which would force us to ask our community to pass a bond.

We will be creating a committee of parents and community members to discuss types of construction and get feedback on whether we are able to move forward. In the meantime, our staff will be receiving updated training of improved protocols.

Some of these trainings will be ongoing throughout the year and our safety plan will be adjusted throughout the year as needed. As a security and safety measure, we are not able to publish the details of our safety plan to the public.

The main point I want to make is that we have spent much of the summer looking for ways to improve an already strong plan, because our number one goal is to keep students and staff safe.

We want to thank the Rockdale Police Department, Milam County Sheriff’s Office and DPS for all of their input and help in improving our plans. We are confident that these departments will provide the support our district needs in any situation that arises. Everyone is looking forward to having our students back on campus for a great 2022-2023 school year. I am always available to talk to you or discuss any concerns. My office phone is 512-430-6000.
