Body

FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE

Last Wednesday morning it was 68 degrees at my house. Most who know me well know that 68 degrees is my cutoff between summer and winter. That’s just how my body reacts.

As I do every day, I went outside with my hot tea to sit in my chair. The sprinkler system had run during the wee hours of the morning so there was a nice, cool microclimate. I kind of shivered and the first thing I did was check the weather. I briefly thought of going inside and getting a hoodie but decided to enjoy shivering since it’s been so hot. Plus, the shivering was short-lived.

I even used a little hot water in the shower that morning, and it’s been a long time since I’ve used any.

Since Aug. 2, my newspaper delivery person, Victoria, has been on vacation in Idaho so Mary Lou and I split up the city into east and west and we run her route. That first Wednesday it was incredibly hot, but these last two Wednesdays haven’t been quite as bad.

My body can handle these over 100 degrees days, but I have trouble with the cold.

And I know most people are exactly the opposite. My good friend Leigh Armstrong Owens is the only one who agrees with me about loving hot weather and hating the cold.

The best things about heat like we’ve been having are the showers I take using only cold water. I always feel exhilarated afterwards.

Also, and I know this is way too much information, not in the least amorous. —kwc— There are people in this world who love barbecue and people who like barbecue. And probably a few weirdos who don’t like it at all.

I’m in the like barbecue category. I love it every time I have it, but I don’t have to have it every week or even every month.

But the love barbecue people will travel out of town just to eat barbecue. And that’s wonderful because we should all do something we love.

When I go out of town I tend to eat something I can’t get in Rockdale like Thai or Vietnamese food, or seafood that isn’t catfish.

But we are lucky to have good barbecue in Rockdale. I think the oldest one is Kenny Schneebeli’s Big Boy’s Barbecue which had its 10-year anniversary in July. And it’s delicious. I’m not sure how long Rockdale Meat Market has been selling barbecue, but I know it’s delicious too. Mayor Brett Boren’s Brett’s Family Barbecue is open on Sunday mornings at Treat Yourself Boutique. Our newest barbecue place which we told you about in last week’s paper is Braden Wallis’ 7 Bar Barbecue. Both are also delicious. So it’s easy to find good barbecue around here.

We had cousin Braden Wallis’ barbecue over the weekend and we’re still eating on it. The ribs were so good.

Brother Ken came in for the weekend and Noelia and Augie came over and we had a feast with mom’s homemade beans. She also made a key lime pie which dad had the last of yesterday.

Then we all couch potatoed it moaning and groaning and watching tennis because we were so full. Then we did it all again later that evening, so we all got our barbecue fix until next time.

People like to laugh about Rockdale having so many Mexican food restaurants, but we are lucky to have each and every one because they are all delicious. And definitely my favorite cuisine of all time.

Lucky us.
