Dear editor,
I grew up and lived in Rockdale for 40 years before moving to Georgetown where I currently live. I still have family and longtime friends that reside in Rockdale.
The reason for my letter and concern is, when I drive into Rockdale, I now see a run down town. Roads, neighborhoods and buildings in poor condition. Not many new businesses. It’s sad. It seems since Alcoa shut down, Rockdale deteriorated.
Wynton Thomason’s recent article in The Rockdale Reporter is spot on. “Move forward and adapt.”
My wish is that the city council and leaders in the community get energetic in committing to a vision of creating a city with some vitality. Now is your chance! As Samsung moves forward creating jobs that will bring money and people moving to the surrounding central Texas towns, it’s time!
Even before Taylor had news of Samsung, it has been working on new business, fun opportunities to bring visitors and tourists to their downtown. Ask yourself, what would a tourist or traveler find to do in Rockdale? Chances are, they would drive to a venue in Taylor, Georgetown or Austin to find some sort of entertainment.
I have considered retiring to my home town one day. Rockdale still has a great sense of community that I love.
For example, where will newcomers live if they want to settle in Rockdale? Rental property is scarce. Not many areas zoned for multi-family housing such as duplexes or apartments. Well, guess what? Those people who are looking for housing and a place to settle down won’t find a place in Rockdale. They will end up settling in another town, spending their money somewhere else, while Rockdale continues to deteriorate.
So, please, you on the city council and other leaders of the Rockdale community, it’s time to make some changes and bring forth opportunities for development for the future of Rockdale and bring some new life into the town of Rockdale! It’s time!
Sincerely,
Bonnie Davis
