Old tire cleanup

On Saturday, June 5, Milam County will sponsor an old tire clean up day. Load up your old tires and bring them to the Milam County Precinct Three headquarters, 107 N. FM 487, Rockdale, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

We will accept tires from individuals, but we will not accept tires from those in the tire business. The tires will be unloaded at the Precinct 3 headquarters and later loaded on trucks and hauled off for disposal. The cleanup is being paid for through a generous grant from our Central Texas Council of Governments and we thank Executive Director Jim Reed for helping with this.

Largest grant ever for Milam County

Last week we were notified by the General Land Office in Austin that four cities in the county will receive an historic $27.3 million for disaster mitigation projects in Milam County. We thank Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush for working so closely with Milam County and the cities on this matter. The money will be used by the cities of Buckholts, Cameron, Milano and Rockdale for various infrastructure improvement projects to proactively prepare for the next natural disaster.

Buckholts was awarded $4,479,940 for a sewer and storm water project; Camer on was awarded $14,125,469 for a Little River pumping station improvement project; Milano will receive $4,317,323 for a citywide road and drainage improvement project; and Rockdale will receive $4,417,469 for a drainage improvement project along Ham Branch.

This is by far the largest grant ever received in Milam County and the money will certainly be put to good use.

Milam County Annex renovation under way

Work is now under way to renovate the former Little River Hospital in Cameron for use as administrative offices for Milam County. Milam County exchanged buildings in downtown Cameron for the 8.5 acre complex which contains the 35,000 square foot hospital building and two other smaller buildings back in June of 2020.

The renovation project will cost about $4.7 million and will be paid for with grant money awarded to the county by the Texas Economic Development Administration. EBCO General Contractors LTD was selected by the Milam County Commissioners Court as the General Contractor.

The Milam County Clerk, Milam County Tax Assessor/Collector, Milam County District Attorney, Milam County Treasurer and Auditor, Adult Probation, Juvenile Probation, Bea’s Kitchen, HOP offices and some Milam County Constables will move to the new location. We hope to complete the project and be moved into the building by June 1, 2022.
