Summer Break is upon us. Two weeks of school left and the kids will be home. Several local churches have youth programs to keep them busy and I have already seen some congregations preparing for Vacation Bible School for the younger kids. Some of my favorite summer childhood memories are from Vacation Bible School. Get your kids involved, not only will they have fun, they will learn lessons they will always remember.
We will be reading from the Book of Mark chapter 10 today. Mark shows Jesus as the servant for the theme of his writing. John Mark wrote shortly after the City of Rome was burned that Nero wanted to shift blame onto the Christians and in doing so, created a dark time for the early church. Confessing the Lordship of Christ meant certain death. With all the despair we hear a story that follows about the Little Ones.
Mark shared a story about Jesus that of course is relevant today in Mark 10 verses 13-15. Our story begins with parents bringing their children, especially small children, to Jesus to be Blessed. They didn’t all understand who Jesus was, but they acted on faith and came. As Isaac blessed Jacob in the Old Testament, fathers were the ones who would lay hands on and bless the birth rights of the first born. The Disciples are angered by the actions of the parents and tried to push them back.
Something that always amazed me was how the 12 could be so far off from what Jesus was doing, yet they were physically with him. They truly believed they were doing the Lord’s will at times when nothing could be further from the truth. Kind of scary huh? How many times have we not yielded to God’s will by selfishly doing things and calling them Holy.
The infants sat in Jesus’ lap as he laid hands on them and Blessed them. He then clears the confusion in the air by stating if you want to be in the kingdom you must come to him as a little child, filled with hope, love, and faith.
As a Christian, we all have the command to take care of the baby sheep. Train up a child while he is young and when he is old he will not depart from it. Believe me they aren’t kids long, so don’t waste a lot of time.
Treasure every moment.
