Dear editor,

Last week during our last cold ice day I saw friendship in action. A lady walked up to Brookshire Brothers deli counter for breakfast.

She wore only a moth-eaten sweater, thin dress and worn flats on bare feet. I knew this 80ish-year-old lady from other visits.

She had come to buy herself and her friend breakfast. Usually it was the friend who came in because this dear lady didn’t have much money, but her friend was sick so she came over to get breakfast. She made her selection and counted out her crumpled dollars and a few coins. She pulled her sweater around her, took her food and walked across the street to the Budget Inn. This is the only place in town they, at their age and income, can afford.

The Senior Center in town helps those in need but they can’t provide meals on wheels without volunteers. They also need donations to provide other services and the Hop Bus can’t run without drivers.

As a community let’s support our Senior Citizen’s Center so they can continue to care for our aging citizens. The food bank also needs volunteers.
