Dear editor, Last week, the Cameron Animal Shelter experienced the surge in intakes many may have heard about other shelters and rescues experiencing due to too many people letting dogs loose and not reclaiming them. Cameron reached critical mass quickly. Fortunately, they had been clearing their shelter for a planned intake, but 11 strays in one day overwhelmed the system.

Sandra Ritch, Cameron’s Animal Control Officer sounded the alarm, and the county community pulled together and got 31 dogs fostered in less than 24 hours. The shelter is ready for the planned intake. The dogs that hadn’t had a chance to be spayed, neutered, and vaccinated have time to get those procedures scheduled, and Cameron has a chance to find permanent homes for those dogs — all because our Milam County community answered a call for help.

Shelters are designed to hold lost dogs until their owners can reclaim them. Many dogs don’t get reclaimed, so shelters always have adoptable dogs. They should be the first place to look if a family wants to add a pet. If shelters don’t have what people are seeking, the next stop should be a reputable rescue whose dogs are already spayed and neutered.

I believe Rockdale Shelter’s adoption fee covers spay, neuter, and rabies vaccination. Cameron’s $75 adoption fee with get you an altered, vaccinated dog. Milam Touch of Love has 28 adoptable dogs who are all spayed, neutered, and current on vaccinations with adoption fees up to $200. Charlyne’s Pound Puppies in Thorndale has dogs for adoption as well.

Thank you, Milam County, for pulling together to save these adoptable dogs. Please spay and neuter your pets. If you can’t afford it, please contact us at mtolsnipandchip@ gmail.com.
