Body

I guess we really haven’t made it through yet, but I was thinking of all the things that have helped me get through this virus mess.

Don’t give me any flack about this but my number one thing is cigarettes. I think I can safely speak for all smokers by saying none of us would have made it this far without them. If they stop making them or delivering them there’s going to be trouble.

Wine. A lot of it after work. Yet another unhealthy coping mechanism, but one I enjoy whether or not there’s a pandemic.

Food. I have had a lot more time to think about it and cook it lately. And especially to eat it.

My parents. My original intention when I moved back to Rockdale was to buy my own place after my house in Houston sold. Then we all decided that was stupid. I don’t know what I’d do with myself if I were alone in a house. Go stir crazy, I suppose. They keep me grounded.

My dogs and cats. I have at least a few things I must do every day like feeding them and walking them. They have all been getting a lot more petting and cuddling lately. And treats because I don’t want to be the only one getting fat.

My job. We are considered essential since we get the news out with the paper, website, emails and social media keeping everyone informed. There are only five of us employees and we decided we are far enough apart in this building that we’d continue coming in instead of working from home. Plus there are a lot of things we can’t do from home. So far that is working out well.

Plants and yard. All three of us like to grow things and piddle in the yard. It’s a good stress reliever. And it doesn’t even have to be doing something active. Just going out to see what’s happening to the things we’ve planted is soothing.

My closest friends through phone calls and text messages. They’ve kept me sane and laughing since college, and are continuing to do so. I guess that works both ways.

I was talking to one of my big city friends the other day. I brought up that we had our first case of COVID-19. This was several weeks ago, obviously. Anyway, her reply was, “How did it even find y’all?” She has been to Rockdale once in case you were wondering.

The social media memes. These funny COVID-19 memes have been life itself. Laughter is always the best medicine, and I’m glad we all have a good sense of humor about it. I suppose that will last until it affects us personally. And I hope it stays as far away from each of your families as it has so far.

I’m not much of a TV watcher, but my sister-inlaw, Noelia, showed me how to work Netflix the other day. That has proven to be a good escape for me.

One of China’s most famous bloggers is Li Ziqi (sometimes spelled as one word) has videos with calm music and beautiful scenes. It’s mostly a cooking blog, but she lives a very different life than we do. She grows and harvests most of what she makes in every meal. Even though she is working hard, the videos are very calming and certainly diverting. Highly recommended.

I hope to hear from some of you about what has been keeping you sane during all of this. Whatever it is, please keep doing it.
