First off some important information. AT&T has been suffering with a major outage for three weeks with no estimate about when service will be restored. This has caused Rockdale Christian Service’s food pantry to be without phone and internet service. If you need assistance they recommend that you use their Facebook messenger until the problem is solved. Please pass the word around to people you know who use the pantry.
There was bad weather on Monday night all around us, but Rockdale seems to have been spared the worst of it. Elgin, Round Rock, Taylor and Georgetown were all hit by the storms.
If you know anyone who had damage, the Texas Department of Emergency Management is a good place to report it for disaster assistance. Go to damage.tdem.texas.gov and click on “March Severe Weather.”
We lost electricity at home about 4 p.m. on Monday and then it came on again for about an hour around 6 p.m. and then was off for the rest of the night. All of our phones died before we went to bed so we didn’t know what was going on.
I put the dogs in bed with me and when the electricity came back on, sometime in the early morning hours, they realized it and woke me up, ready to go outside.
So the US Senate unanimously voted to make daylight savings time permanent (see editorial this page). I, for one, am all for it. I love how it stays light later and look forward to the spring time change every year even though I lose an hour of sleep.
Although, the US Senate all agreeing on something is, in itself, newsworthy in this day and age.
I’m curious about what the rest of you think. I have friends in northern states who say the sun wouldn’t come up until 9 a.m. That seems strange to me, but it wouldn’t be that way here. And if that’s the case up north, wouldn’t they already be used to it by now?
The bill now goes to the House for consideration.
Our redbud tree is in bloom so I am going to call it spring in Rockdale, although I may eat those words since Easter isn’t April 17. And we always get a norther before Easter.
I ordered some zinnia seeds and planted them last Thursday. The next thing to bloom will be the wild wisteria that grows in the woods behind the house and always puts on a beautiful, if short, show.
And speaking of northerners, I got to see one of my oldest and best friends over the weekend. All of my very close friends either live in Minneapolis or New Mexico or are dead, so it’s always nice to get to see them whenever I can.
Shari Seifert has been a good friend since high school and she was down here in Lexington doing some real estate work on her granny’s farm. We had a good time catching up and it was a beautiful day on Sunday. I’m ready for lots more beautiful days.
