This year’s RISD Veterans Day program was the best one yet and, as usual, I got a little tearyeyed a few times. Those elementary kids singing “Grand Old Flag” got me right in the “feels.” They are on the front page this week as well as the veterans themselves who were recognized during the ceremony.

Last year it was in the high school auditorium, and I remember because I was on the front row so I could take pictures. While waiting for the ceremony to start I looked up at the blue velvet curtains and wondered if they could be the same ones that were there when I was in high school from 1979 to 1982.

I made a social media post and some of my friends who are older than me said they were. Those curtains are 67 years old this year. They have certainly held up well.

But I digress. Both the American Legion and the VFW were heavily involved in the program this year and it is so nice to do something for them and their families to show how much we all appreciate them for their service to our country.

Again, I teared up as each veteran was recognized in the war they fought in. I’m glad I had my camera in front of my face.

So the planners at RISD also deserve a big shout out for the program as well as all of the participants. Great job! Already looking forward to next year’s program. —kwc— Thursday night be sure to come to Rockdale Downtown Association’s Christmas Tree Lighting at Wolf Park at 6 p.m. There will be free chili and hot chocolate for everyone who attends.
