JUDGE’S COMMENTS
One of the true gems of Milam County is our Milam County Historical Museum. The museum is located in downtown Cameron and consists of the original museum and the “Old Town Cameron” museum. Both are cram packed with the wonderful history of the county. The museum is under the direction of Charles King and the Old Town Cameron addition is under the direction of Jamie Larson. These men have done an outstanding job of preserving and displaying the rich history of the county.
Take a few minutes and tour the interesting exhibits at the museum, where you can see artifacts of our ancient ancestors dating from the ice ages to a recent band uniform of a Rockdale Tiger or Cameron Yoemen.
Old Town Cameron is an unbelievable, hand-crafted replica built and donated by John Johnson, who is a longtime Cameron resident. He has spent almost 50 years recreating old town Cameron, which includes an exact replica of the courthouse, many of the old downtown buildings, his boyhood home and of course the trains. There is a model railroad depicting the trains that are such a huge part of the history of Cameron and the county.
These facilities are unique to the county and not available anywhere else. The Old Town Cameron display is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The museum is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
Visit these museums and learn more about the fascinating history of Milam County.
