The worst part of becoming the editor last week is that my right-hand man, Shannon Whorton, is on a well-deserved vacation to the Grand Canyon this week. He’s the one who makes sure the paper looks nice and makes us all look good.
However, my other trusty right-hand man, my Dad, will be here to help. He thinks he’s forgotten everything since his retirement. He hasn’t. Although he did come in to brush up a little. And then Mike Brown showed up and saved us.
If you see anything that looks wonky in this week’s paper it would be my fault. Next week’s paper will look all back to normal.
I got lots of comments about the 9/11 remembrances last week. I couldn’t believe how many people answered with their stories. Seems everyone has vivid memories of that fateful day 20 years ago. If you want to read them all we put them online at www.rockdalereporter.com.
The voting has begun for this year’s Best of Rockdale Contest. There is an ad in the paper this week on page 8A with the voting link in it. It’s also on our website and Facebook page. So get to voting for your favorite Rockdale businesses.
This year The Reporter is the sponsor and we’re in partnership with the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce. Many thanks to Chamber Director Denise Brock and Curah Beard for her mad artistic and computer skills.
As I write this, TxDOT is pouring the concrete in front of The Reporter on this block and the city is putting the water pipes in on the next block. Pretty soon you won’t need to use our back door anymore.
This whole project hit a few bumps and didn’t go quite as planned but it’s finally happening and I can’t wait to see the final results.
If I remember correctly they will finish the north side of Cameron Avenue down to The 1895 (old city hall) and then start working on the south side after that.
It’s going to look so nice!
I sure enjoyed watching all the mural work going on during the past two weeks. The artist, Sam Welty, left Rockdale Thursday and he left our town a little more beautiful.
The last thing he did was a stencil with a Rockdale Tiger and the hashtag #BeRockdaleProud on it. There is one at Caffey Corner, another at Attorneys of Texas Title and a final one at Corona’s Mexican Restaurant.
You should drive around and look at them. And the good news is the artist left the stencil with Rockdale Earth Day so we could be seeing more of them around town.
Sam Welty worked so well with the high school art students and got them very excited. I arrived at the Veteran’s Park wall about five minutes after the students arrived and Sam already had all their names memorized. He is a great teacher as well as a great artist.
Special thanks and congratulations go out to Rockdale Earth Day Chairman David Melton for spearheading this mural project. You brought your idea to life with the help of our community and you certainly chose a great artist.
Rumor has it that he wants to come back and do more murals here. I’m all for it.
