So Texas has finally reached a COVID-19 plateau according to the governor, which means we should be on the downside of the spread.
Color me hopeful, but unconvinced.
However, after 4,500 Texas deaths, he hasn’t ruled out shutting everything down again.
Over the weekend we only had six cases in Milam County so that’s certainly heading in the right direction after having had a one-day high of 17 cases.
To me this is all so embarrassing. As a country we are a massive failure at containing the virus.
The U.S. makes up 4% of the population of the earth, but we have 25% of the virus cases. People smarter than me will figure out why we failed so badly, but fail we did.
There are third world countries who fared better than we did. Among industrialized countries we are the laughingstock of them all.
It seemed like everything was going along just fine with the stock market and jobs. The economy was doing fine.
But it all came crashing down and couldn’t survive it’s first test. So here we are.
To me it seems “the great economy” we had was all a house of cards which fell down with the first hint of a breeze. It was all smoke and mirrors. My 401-K sure looked good. Until it didn’t.
This virus caught us by surprise and showed us what for.
Who would have thought in March when all this started that we would be where we are in August? Certainly not me. I am as surprised as the next person. And I don’t think it’s going anywhere any time soon.
I think we will reach the year mark and still be going through this in March of 2021.
I hear some in the medical community say the virus may never go away. I hope that is not the case.
And they are steadily working on a vaccine. But there are people who won’t want to take it. I’m not sure how I feel about taking it. But that will just further prolong everything.
I picked my sister-in-law up at the airport recently from a trip to Mexico to visit her family. In Mexico she was checked at three different points before being allowed to get on the airplane to come home. Her temperature was taken and they gave her a card that was signed by each person at the check point. She was supposed to keep this card with her to show the people in the U.S. airport.
When she got back to the U.S., no one asked her for the card, no one searched her luggage or took her temperature. She had one suitcase full of mole paste, but she said it could have been illegal drugs and she’d have gotten through just fine.
I guess it’s a good thing that Mexico cared enough not to let anyone into the U.S. with COVID-19 symptoms, because the U.S. certainly did not care if she had any.
I think we can be the greatest country in the world. I love America and being an American, but I feel we are not living up to our potential. Especially for the past couple of decades. Maybe longer.
I hope we all start caring about each other again one of these days. And I hope I’m wrong about having to mark a one-year anniversary of the virus.
