JUDGE’S COMMENTS

Last week was particularly sweet in the county as we had our first ever Moot Court competition and we began in earnest to make the county look better.

Eighteen teams from each of our five schools competed in the Moot Court competition and on Saturday we received almost 9,000 old tires from all over the county that will be recycled.

The Moot Court competition was a huge success as the schools, lawyers and service organizations came together to do something really nice for our fine young students.

You would have been so proud to see our youth argue their case in such a professional manner.

You would have been proud to see our Milam County Bar work together to tutor the teams. You would have also been very proud to see the lawyers of the county and our Justices of the Peace work together to serve as appellate judges in the competition.

What did we accomplish? First our students got a brief look into the practice of law. It could be that this brief glimpse might be enough to encourage one or more of them to enter some field of the law.

Secondly, it was a great step of cooperation within our county.

We must all work together to move the county forward and this demonstrates what working together can do.

Thanks to the students, the educators, the administrators, the lawyers, the Justices of the Peace, those who worked so hard to make this such an overwhelming success and to the Cameron and Rockdale Lions and Rotary Clubs.

See story page 1A.

Last week was also a big step forward in cleaning up our county as we had a big response to the free tire recycling event.

Almost 9,000 old tires of all kinds were dropped off at Precinct Two Headquarters in Cameron Saturday.

The tires were unloaded, hauled off and/or stacked for recycling.

Thanks to Commissioner Donald Shuffield and his staff, Sheriff Chris White, Milam County Homeland Security/Emergency Management Coordinator Susan Reinders and all the rest who were on hand to unload the tires.

Due to the large volume we will do this again soon.

Remember that we will have dumpsters located around the county very soon for your use as well.

I will provide the specifics of these next week.

Finally, we are aggressively enforcing the Health & Safety Code in the county to help get the county cleaned up.

The code prohibits illegal dumping of old tires and debris on private property and there are stiff penalties for violations.

In fact, a Rockdale man was arrested and jailed Friday for violating the code. So please help us get the county cleaned up.

I am proud to report that last week was really sweet as we are truly making progress to move the county forward.”
