Back in November, I had the pleasure to attend the Southern Baptist of Texas Annual Meeting. That is the state convention that our church is a part of. During that meeting, we heard some amazing preaching, but one preacher really stuck out to me. It was Dr. Greg Matte from Houston’s First. I have heard him preach many times; in fact, I listen to his sermons via podcast often. He said something during his sermon there that really spoke to me, and I wanted to share it with you. He asked this question, “To you, are people scenery, machinery or ministry?”
While we go about our day, we are always surrounded by people. We see them at home, at work, at the store and at citywide events. Here in Rockdale, we see them everywhere. In fact, as our city grows, we will see more and more. Who are people to you? How do you view them? Let me break down Dr. Matte’s quote. When people are scenery, they are just things we pass by. We don’t really interact with them; they are just there. When we view people as scenery, they mean nothing to us, so we don’t talk to them or interact in any way with them. They are people we pass by at Walmart or Brookshire. This view of people requires nothing from you and nothing from them.
When we view people as machinery, we want something from them. They are there to serve a purpose and that is all. This would be like the waitress at the restaurant you visit. You don’t want much conversation with them, they are there to serve your food and fill your cup and that is all. When we view people this way, they are a means to and end. Once they accomplish their task, your relationship with them is over and you return to your day.
When we view people as ministry, we are seeing them as they were created to be. When people are ministry, we see them as God sees them. With love, respect and honor. We see them as co-image bearers of God. We are all created in His image and thus we are all co-image bearers of Him. In this view, people have a purpose, to be loved. When we have this view of people, our heart is open to them and desires to speak to them and to know them. We have a desire to share with them the good news of the gospel of Christ. With this view, we love everyone. Even those with whom we disagree and those who are different than we are.
I was asked once, “Stephen, what do you love?” This question was not for me to answer with my family, but what is it that I love, what is my passion? My answer to that question was this, “I love people.” With that love of people, I want to see them come to know Jesus, to know of his sacrifice for them and his love for them. To know the forgiveness God offers to them through Jesus. So, friends, I ask you the same question, “What do you love?” I also ask you this question, “Who are people to you?”
Think about this as you go about your week. Think about this as you see people out and about. Who are they to you?
