Since I wrote last week, the COVID-19 virus has certainly spread and the death toll has risen. As of March 16, we now have almost 4,000 cases in the U.S. and 67 deaths.
Two weeks ago we only had a couple of cases in Texas and now we have over 100. By the time you read this article the numbers will be higher. However, our number one goal is to slow the spread of the disease and by working together, we can do so.
If the disease spreads unabated, we could severely diminish law enforcement protection and even our medical providers. Thus, we encourage everyone to follow the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) guidelines to prevent the spread of the disease.
Accordingly, public schools in the county have closed and we are recommending that one not attend an event with a crowd of 50 people or more.
Churches and social events are being canceled or held on line and we are asking that the public stay at home as much as possible.
Wash your hands frequently; do not touch your face, nose, eyes or mouth as these are easy points of entry to your body; and if you feel sick stay at home. Do not take any unnecessary chances to infect others.
During the school closures, beginning Tuesday, March 17, Rockdale ISD and other public schools will provide “grab and go” meals.
Breakfast and lunch meals will be for children under the age of 18 and may be picked up daily at the schools.
We are working on other plans to get meals delivered to our seniors as well.
There is no vaccine or cure for the COVID-19 virus at this point. Further, we don’t know who has the virus until there are symptoms.
Therefore, our primary objective is to work together to prevent the spread of the disease. However, we will get through this crisis by realizing the staggering quickness of the spread and by following the social distancing rules advocated by the CDC.
We can do this in Milam County.
