January— Four people were arrested by Milam C ounty Sheriff p ersonnel on F riday, Jan 6 during an afternoon drug raid at an address in the 100 block of CR 311 west of Rockdale. RISD will hold a bond election in May to meet its needs (it passed.) Dorothy Williams was grand marshal for Rockdale’s MLK Day march held Sunday.
February— Rockdale’s favorite historian, Dr. Lucile Estell, was awarded the prestigious Ruth Lester Lifetime Achievement Award for Historic Preservation at THC’s awards ceremony last Saturday in Austin for all of her work on the El Camino de los Tejas National Historic Trail. Tamara Hebert Powell started her Black History Month columns in The Reporter continuing a tradition started by her grandmother, Susie Sansom Piper. A bomb threat at Rockdale High School was called in and was given the “all clear” after a few hours work by all of Milam County’s law enforcement officials.
March— Milano bus driver, Mary Ruiz, was recognized by Milano Elementary School for her quick actions in saving a child’s life. Margie Clark celebrated her 100th birthday at Rockdale Estates and Rehabilitation.
April— Gertharine Green had a happy 106th birthday on Sunday at a party surrounded by family and friends, Cold, rainy weather caused a last-minute change to the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce’s annual Easter Egg Hunt which moved from Fair Park to inside the Patterson Civic Center.
May— Sgt. Joshua Clouse of the Cameron Police department was killed in the line of duty after responding to a shooting at a residence in Cameron. Marquise Flowers, 18, Rockdale, was arrested on Monday by the Rockdale Police Department for the offense of engaging in organized criminal activity-murder, for the murder of Jeffrey McKinney Jr. in Rockdale.
June— After the arrest last week of Marquise Flowers, a second suspect in the April murder of Jeffrey McKinney Jr., James L. Godfrey IV, 22, Temple, turned himself in to the Milam County Sheriff’s Department. The annual MARC Ride raised over $56,000. Ground-breaking began on the 660-home Cornerstone Subdivision.
July— SLR Properties announced a world-class Advanced Manufacturing & Logistics Campus will be the company’s first project at the former Alcoa property. The campus will employ thousands of people.
August— About 300 people attended this year’s annual Milam and Burleson Counites Groundwater Summit. Sandow Steam Electric Station Units 4 and 5 will be demolished in a series of carefully controlled implosions over the next few months.
September— Municipal Judge Jerry Waggoner has decided to retire after 19 years of service to the City of Rockdale. Darian “Hump” Jackson, 12, lost his two-year battle with encephalitis, a brain infection.
October— East Seventh Avenue is now Gertrude Calvin Hardway Street after a renaming ceremony. Not only did Rockdale high School senior Georgia Woodard win homecoming queen, but she also took home the Miss Rockdale Fair Queen title on Saturday. The Rockdale Tigers brought the Milam County prize back home on Friday night with a 31-21 win over the Cameron Yoemen.
November— Another stellar year is in the books for the Rockdale Fair Association after bringing in $969,832 which includes all added money. Work began on the City of Rockdale’s massive water pip replacement project.
December— The annual Buddy Oney Toy Run had a record year raising $13,650. The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce outdid itself with this year’s Christmas parade, the best one in many years.
