Rockdale’s annual Earth Day observance is expanding into an entire month for 2018.

April is “Earth Month” and while the big days are April 20 and 21 there are other events and commemorations scattered throughout the month.

A display highlighting recycling will be at the city library all month, beginning Monday.

Rockdale’s spring Stash Your Trash Day at Fair Park, set for April 14, is now offi cially part of Earth Month.

There will be a week of recycling aluminum cans at an enhanced rate, presentations at local schools and a come-and-go program by Master Naturalists.

And of course, many cleanup projects around town by scores of local volunteers.

RECYCLING—This year’s observance has a special emphasis on recycling.

The month-long library exhibit will highlight recycling projects and will include books and literature on the subject.

Persons recycling aluminum cans at Rockdale Iron & Metal Recycling, 1263 US 79, will be reimbursed at an enhanced rate during one of the weeks in April, yet to be announced.

The enhanced rate will be 60 cents per pound, up from the current rate of 40.

Steve Shannon of Progressive Waste Solutions will address elementary and intermediate school students twice April 20 on the topic of recycling.

He will be on the elementary campus at 10:20 a.m., to meet with second graders, and at the intermediate school at 2 p.m.

STASH YOUR TRASH—City of Rock-dale residents are urged to take advantage of the spring Stash Your Trash Day from 8 a.m. to 12-noon April 14 at Fair Park.

It’s only for city residents. Place of residence will be verifi ed at the site or city residents may bring a driver’s license or water bill to verify they live within the city limits.

The city’s chipper will also be available. Free chipping is offered for limbs four inches or smaller which must be transported from a truck or trailer.

NATURALISTS—El Camino Real chapter of Master Naturalists will offer information and free take-home items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at The Community Room, 109 North Main.

Information will be featured on bee, bat, bird and butterfl y pollinators, trees, water conservation, recycling and more.

There will be craft activities and face painting for children and author Sean Wall will discuss his book on edible plants.

Also that day, just down the street, Rockdale Girl Scout Troops 9603 and 9603 will clean up the Old City Cemetery, and its adjacent cemeteries

THE BIG DAY—The actual Earth Day observance is Friday, April 20, which begins with a breakfast and send-off in the RHS gym.

Breakfast for volunteers provided by the Emmaus Project, is at 8:30 a.m., followed by a send-off at 9.

Student organizations, and other volunteer teams, will tackle a number of projects around town from 9 a.m. to 12-noon, including litter pickup, planting and general refurbishing.
