On the last Sunday of Black History Month, Feb. 25—New Jerusalem Nondenominational Church Pastor Dr. Dennis L. Brooks Sr. received a surprise honor from a Houston foundation.

Earlier, on Feb. 16, the “Hanging Tough—Even When the Road is Rough” Foundation celebrated its 23rd annual Positive Infl uential Males and unveiled the newest African American stamp featuring Lena Horne.

Dr. Brooks was an honoree at the event in Houston, but because of a prior commitment could not attend.

Ms. Flo’rida Cornelius-Cooper, founder and CEO of the non-profit foundation, brought the honor to Dr. Brooks’ church service here Sunday, Feb. 25, where his church family could celebrate the achievement.

Ms. Cooper, a 29-year breast cancer survivor, organized the foundation 25 years ago with a mission of helping others fighting cancer.

She volunteers throughout the Houston area providing meals, support and shelter for patients and families with cancer and other terminal diagnoses.

She purposely honors those who are living so they can know that others appreciate their accomplishments in their communities.

Ms. Cooper met Dr. Brooks and wife Dr. Clara Brooks at a leadership conference in October. She felt that his contributions to the church (New Jerusalem), the seminary (Institute for Teaching God’s Word), the non-profit (American Academy for Crisis Counseling), and the community (Sho’Nuff Soul Food), were worthy of honor in Houston.

Thousands of prominent figures have been honored through “Hanging Tough,” including federal offi ce holders, physicians, lawyers, judges, community activists and others.

“Dr. Brooks was surprised and honored to know that he is making a difference in Houston. It’s our hope that others will see and follow the vision he provides through church services, workshops, seminary courses and more,” Ms. Cooper said. She added:

“Hanging Tough salutes Rockdale’s own 2018 Positive Influential Male—Dr. Dennis L. Brooks Sr.—pastor, professor, author, entrepreneur, husband, father, grandfather and servant of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
