Appraisal sought for all 167 acres
Body

Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) is pursuing an invitation to bid to sell the 167-acre Rockdale Industrial & Business Park.

Meeting in special session Thursday in MDD headquarters, the board also directed Executive Director Kara Clore to obtain an appraisal on the property and to move forward, with the board’s legal counsel to post an invitation for bids.

The park was supposed to be the home of a major plastics manufacturing plant, Pari Olefins of Taylor.

JOBS—Owner Haresh Satchithanandan had forecast 30 jobs within a three-year period and predicted Rockdale would become a hub for the plastics industry.

Infrastructure work began and the MDD was preparing to sign off on $611,000 of municipal sales and use bonds to construct a building for Pari Olefins.

But problems developedlas Satchithanandan signed an agreement to locate the plant in the industrial park but missed two deadlines to sign an agreement for the building with the MDD.

By February, the MDD had passed twice on taking any action on the building and left the matter up to the city council.

On Feb. 12, in a series of unanimous votes, the council ended its relationship with Pari Olefins and also pulled out of a $750,000 state grant which was to have assisted in construction of the business.

Thursday’s action came after an executive session.

OFFICERS—Also during the meeting, the MDD elected the following board officers for 2018-19:

• Dr. John M. Weed III, president.

• Allan Miller, vice-president.

• Trent Wages, secretary.

• Elissa Benford-Roberts, treasurer.

In other business, the board postponed action on two agenda items, repairs on Texas Street, and an interlocal agreement between the MDD and the City of Rock-dale on a downtown revitalization grant.
