There won’t be a barbecue cookoff or auto show at the Rockdale Fair this year, due to the pandemic, but similar events will be staged at Apache Pass by non-Fair organizers.

The first Apache Pass Cook-Off & Car Show is planned for Oct. 16-18 at the Apache Pass Events Center, according to Nicholas Baggerly and Brian Fisher, organizers of the event

“A lot of people had already taken time off from work for the fair, so we’re just trying to accommodate them,” Fisher said.

More than 30 teams are entered in the cookoff so far and there is room for up to 100 cookers to pay the $125 entry fee. The competition is sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbecue Society, Baggerly said.

Winners in the brisket, ribs, chicken and cookers’ choice categories will earn trophies and cash. There will also be a jackpot beans competition for those in the barbecue contest, providing they pay the $20 bean cookoff entry fee.

The car show will feature cars, trucks motorcycles and ATVs. There will be 20 categories for the vehicles and the first 100 entries to the car show event will get goodie bags.

Kenny Orts and the Last Chance Band will play Oct. 17 (Saturday) from 8 p.m. to midnight.
