This year's group will perform "The Miracle Worker" at 4 p.m. today (May 28) at Hogg Auditorium on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Milano also advanced to state in 2003 and 2007.

Of the eight Class A plays that advanced to state, Milano is the first to perform. There will be two sessions of four plays, one starting at 4 p.m. and the other at 7:30. Tickets are available at the door and are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Susan Meyer, in her first year as Milano OAP director says the challenge isn't the state contest, but the time the students have had to wait. The Class A state contest was originally scheduled to be May 9, but was postponed when the UIL put a halt on all extra-cirricular contests due to the Swine Flu outbreak.

"The challenge comes from how to balance rehearsal with too much rehearsal," Meyer said. "We try to mix serious rehearsals

with slightly crazy ones so that we can keep our show fresh- and we strive for each actor to find something new to bring to their characterization at each rehearsal."

The Milano OAP program has also advanced to state in 2003 and 2007. The 2007 play "Anatomy of Gray" took runnerup honors.

On being the first up on competition day, Meyer said it is a relief.

"That is a great slot to be in because after our performance we can sit back and watch the other schools and actually relax for a short while," Meyer said. They are sure to have an auditorium full of supporters from across Milam County watching the performance.

"We have a fantastic amount of community and administrative support here in Milano," Meyer said. "We are humbled by well wishes and grateful to have been given the opportunity to showcase the young talent in our small town.
