Rockport man draws 15 years in drug case

JEFFERSON CIT Y, MO—A 49-year-old Rockport man, who was arrested in Milam County in December, 2004, on a drug charge, received a 15-year noparole federal prison sentence last week.

David E. Shafer was convicted of drug trafficking and money laundering in a scheme authorities said was involved with transporting hundreds of pounds of cocaine and marijuana from Texas to Missouri.

Milam Count y aut hor it ies seized $56,000 during the arrest. As the result of a plea bargain which saw Shafer drop his appeal, $40,000 went to the county and $16,000 to Shafer's son.

Co-defendents Galen Scott, 47, and Paul Cook, 50, received threeyear and four-year, 9-month prison terms, respectively.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
