MOTION ON THE FLOOR
In fact the first activity on the floor of the new Rockdale High School gym is installation of the floor itself. That milestone is under way in the extremely busy renovationexpansion project which promises to have the mostly-new campus ready to open in about two months. The first day of classes is Aug. 24 but volleyball practice will get under way on Monday, Aug, 3. The existing RHS gym is being kept as a practice gym. The 12,561-square-foot new gym is part of an 18,867-square-foot wing which also includes the first new RHS dressing rooms in 50 years. 76-year-old gets life for shotgun slaying
CAMERON—A 76-year-old Milano man drew a life sentence from a 20th District Court jury Thursday after he was convicted of murder in the shotgun slaying investigators said grew out of a long-standing feud. Gordon Currin received the life sentence after the jury found him guilty of shooting 48-year-old Gregory James Storey, also of Milano, three times in the back Oct. Full Story

Sales tax rebates falter
Rockdale shows sizeable drop in monthly total; hospital district sales tax loss measured first time
It appears Rockdale's monthly sales tax totals are finally reflecting the decline in construction at Sandow 5. Rockdale's June sales tax rebate check will be $50,961, a 15.6 decrease from last year's June check. The big difference? Last June there were still about 1,500 persons working on Luminant's Sandow 5 power plant unit. Full Story

Big Blue ranked No. 15 in preseason polls; 75 days until opening kickoff
The last time a Rockdale football team won a district title was way back in 1999. According to the "football bible" that year is going to be updated.
