Be the living word for the eyes of others

By HARRY R. STEVENSON Rockdale Christian Church

Some time ago I heard this story. A man had invited an out-of-town guest to dinner one evening. You can imagine the anxiety this caused his wife and she was nervous. So she went to all the same extra effort as you women do who have had this situation sprung on them.

Dinner was very good and afterwards, conversation continued for some time in the living room before the guests departed. After a few days the husband noticed his wife reading a book they had had for some time but had never read.

He asked her, "Why the sudden interest in the book?"

She said, "It was only a book until I met the author" who was the unexpected guest and had written the book. A book is always more interesting if you know the author or the one whose life the book is about."

From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible contains an unbroken theme about the Lord Jesus Christ, inspired by the Holy Spirit. Jesus Himself said that all the Scriptures speak of Him (Luke 24:27). This includes the books Moses wrote, the ones the world attacks today.

Jesus spoke of this and said, "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. If you believe Moses you would believe me, for he wrote about me.

"But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you gong to believe what I say?"

Many of the modern scholars claim the books of Moses were written by a dozen or so authors, hundreds of years after Moses. However, to the mature believer in Jesus Christ, all this is nonsense; while a little irritating, it does not move us from our position of believing all the Scriptures. It is either all or nothing. If it's not "all" then who gets to choose what part should be omitted?

The question at hand is, why do some people not read or believe the Bible? Looking back to the opening illustration about the book and the author, the average person will not pick up the Bible and start reading, even if it has been on the coffee table for some years. So how will they be attracted to it and start reading as they have never done before?

Some who never read the Bible will never know about Christ; it is when they read the Bible or see the word living in others that they will come to know Jesus. If those claiming to be Christian are not living a life that reflects Christ in every aspect of their lives, there is no way the unread will come to know about Christ and who He is. The world and Satan will see to that, for neither will point the way for the lost.

The Christian has the blessed privilege of being the living word that shows the world who Christ is and what He can do for them as their Saviour. Then, they who don't know Jesus will start reading their Bibles by following the example set by you.

Is the word living in you? Remember, He is the Author and Finisher of our faith!
