Bryan man cleared of 2006 Sunny Food Mart holdup in jury trial
Rockdale police admit to being "stunned" after a 19-year-old Bryan man was found not guilty of the Nov. 6, 2006, aggravated robbery of Rockdale's Sunny Food Mart in 20th District Court last week. The acquittal of Justin Tiger Thomas blindsided Lt. J. D. Newlin and Police Chief Thomas Harris, both of whom testified at the three-day trial. Full Story
Courthouse re-dedication ceremony set July Fourth
It was "born" on the Fourth of July, re-dedicated on the Fourth of July and this Saturday the Milam County Courthouse will pick up the Texas Historical Commission's highest honor. In a Fourth of July ceremony beginning at 10 a.m., the 117-year-old courthouse will be declared a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, the eighth such honor for a Milam location. Full Story

Thorndale Barbecue Cookoff teams made a splash as they found ways to keep cool during Saturday's sweltering 106-degree temperatures. OPEN FOR BUSINESS
It wasn't exactly "business as usual" but these booths at the Thorndale Barbecue Cookoff were up and running. Barton and Trey Felton manned the Rodenbeck Farm & Ranch booth, selling an assortment of knives and other trinkets from their store. Checking out the goods were customers Jimmy and Gina Gilmore. At right, Ted White shined shoes and boots for $1. He said he had been shining shoes at that price for most of his 52-year career, so he saw "no need to go up now." Jody Logsdon, with scissors, joined the Chamber of Commerce last week and will mark her sixth month in business as an independent consultant with Cookie Lee Jewelry. Logsdon said Cookie Lee has "beautiful, affordable jewelry" and can be used for local fund-raisers. Full Story

Tigers 7-on-7 squad in state tournament
Rockdale replaces dropped out China Spring
Because of a late start in the proceedings, the Rockdale 7-on-7 team needed a helping hand to squeeze into the state tournament and got one from an old foe. When China Spring dropped out of the tournament, Rockdale stepped in for its third straight appearance and fourth overall in the 12th annual event. Full Story

At age 83, Harold Lankford is the envy of every golfer in the world. Why? Because he can shoot his age.
Can you imagine accomplishing a feat on the golf course that not even Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson or Vijay Singh can pull off? And for Milano resident Harold Lankford, it's no big deal because he's done it more than once. The avid golfer shot an 83 on March 20 at the Rockdale Country Club, which just happened to be his 83rd birthday. Full Story
