He will present club members' suggestions to the library board for approval.
Linda Whorton presented a program on her investigation into an ancestor killed in World War I. Armed with nothing but the approximate year of birth, that the ancestor's ship was sunk by a submarine, and that he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Ms. Whorton found his WWI draft registration card which contained his birth date, then where he was buried and his death date.
Using the death date, she found the ancestor's name on the list of casualties in the sinking of the Tuscania by a German U-Boat, Feb. 5, 1918, off the shore of the Scottish Isle of Islet. His body, along with the others killed, was originally buried on the island by the Scottish clan that inhabits it.
In 1920, the American Red Cross built a monument to honor troop casualties. At that time, the American soldiers, with the exception of one, were exhumed and reburied in Arlington National Cemetery.
Next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25 in the conference room at Citizens National Bank's rear entrance. Visitors are welcomed.—Linda Whorton, publicity
