A HOT TIME IN THORNDALE

In spite of heat, cookoff maxes out again with 72 teams

Former Thorndale resident Paul Dickens, now residing in McAlister, Oklahoma, pulled up his "customized" 1954 Chevy pickup that has a smoker under the hood. The 19th annual Thorndale Volunteer Fire Department Barbecue Cookoff featured numerous records on Saturday as 72 cooking teams turned Thorndale City Park into barbecue heaven. That tied the record number of teams in 2008.

Record temperatures also didn't keep crowds away from the popular event.

"Everyone was smokin' at this year's cookoff," joked Tammy Pickett, spokesperson. "We had a great response, especially considering the heat. We had to turn teams away because 72 is all the park can handle."

Official high temperature for Saturday was 106, though one team recorded 110 at their booth, Pickett said.

Overall winner was Under The Influence of Elgin with Hank Smith as head cook.

Second was Krunk Cookers (Michael Cage) of Thrall while Bad Boyz (Sean Leschber) of Taylor was third.

Awards were presented by the newly crowned Miss Thorndale Lisa Wuensche.
