Sandow coal ash not on latest EPA listing

Coal ash produced at Alcoa's now defunct Sandow Power Plant Units 1, 2 and 3, and being stored at the Sandow site was not on a list of "high hazard" sites released this week by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

None of the 44 sites identified by the EPA are in Texas.

The EPA requested information about coal ash impoundments following a Dec. 22 coal ash spill at the Kingston Fossil Plant in Tennessee.

About 314,000 tons of coal ash are stored at the Sandow site. Ashley Monts, spokesperson for Luminant, which now has responsibility for the site, said all Luminant-managed coal ash disposal sites are inspected regularly by the company and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
